WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The number of U.S. military veterans seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder has jumped almost 70 percent since 2006.

A USA Today review of Veterans Affairs records indicates that more than 100,000 combat veterans sought help for mental illness since the start of the war in Afghanistan in 2001, with almost half the cases reported as PTSD.

Those numbers do not include active-duty personnel diagnosed with the disorder.

Of the nearly 1.5 million U.S. troops who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, 750,000 have left the military and are eligible for VA health care, the newspaper said.
