The FDA approves another flu vaccine

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Afluria, an additional seasonal influenza vaccine for people ages 18 and older.

The FDA said Afluria -- intended to protect adults from influenza type A and type B flu viruses -- brings the number of seasonal influenza manufacturers licensed in the U.S. market to six. They are expected to supply a record 132 million doses of influenza vaccine for the 2007-08 influenza season.

Afluria contains inactivated influenza viruses grown in chicken eggs, the FDA said. People allergic to eggs shouldn't receive Afluria.
