KAMPALA, Uganda, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Researchers say high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder among adults displaced by war in northern Uganda could increase war-related violence.

A study published in JAMA said those individuals were more likely to favor violent means to end the conflict compared to people without symptoms of PTSD and depression, the journal said in a release.

The survey, conducted by Patrick Vinck and colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley, found that 74 percent met PTSD symptom criteria and almost half met depression symptom criteria.

Respondents who met the PTSD symptom criteria were more likely to identify violence as a means to achieve peace.

Up to 1.5 million people have been displaced by war in Uganda since the late 1980s.
