CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., July 31 (UPI) -- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration postponed the scheduled Friday launch of the Phoenix Mars Lander for 24 hours.
The lander, to be carried into space aboard a Delta II rocket, was rescheduled for liftoff at one of two Saturday launch times -- 5:26 a.m. EDT or 6:02 a.m. EDT.
NASA officials said the original launch was postponed due to Tuesday's forecast for severe weather conditions around the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, preventing the scheduled fueling of the rocket's second stage.
Although the fueling operation is expected to be completed Wednesday morning, NASA said that would leave insufficient contingency time in the schedule for a Friday launch.
The Phoenix Mars Lander is designed to dig through the Martian soil in that planet's arctic region where water and ice exist and then use its onboard scientific instruments to analyze the samples it retrieves. Phoenix will look not only for water, but also for any signs that some form of life does or could exist on Mars.
