The chain began when a Phoenix woman was offered a kidney by a complete stranger, which sparked a chain reaction of goodwill that could eventually benefit eight people who need kidneys, The Arizona Republic reported Sunday.
The new donation procedure was created to connect donors with recipients whose body chemistry does not match with individuals in similar situations.
Phoenix resident Ron Bunnell said that after his wife Barb received a kidney from Michigan resident Matt Jones, he was moved to continue the donation chain.
"I look at it as Barb got this gift from Matt, and I'm just paying it forward," he said. "It is terrific to be part of something bigger."
His donation to a stranger then moved a friend of that person to react in kind, and the chain continued to grow, the Republic said.
