Smaller zoom lenses due for digital wares

ORLANDO, Fla., July 20 (UPI) -- Researchers at the University of Central Florida created smaller zoom lenses that will soon be added to digital devices through a new licensing deal.

The research team of Shin-Tson Wu, a professor of optics at the school, created the new technology that will keep the current level of clarity enjoyed by such devices in a more compact form, a news release form the university said Friday.

"We have the ability to make these lenses from less than a millimeter to a couple of centimeters in size," Wu said of his group's accomplishment.

The smaller lenses could soon be used in digital cameras and camera phones thanks to a licensing deal the school signed with New Mexico's Holochip Corp.

Wu and his colleagues at the university's College of Optics and Photonics created the smaller adaptive lenses by replicating the human eye.

Wu's group focused on a fluidic lens approach for their creation, adding in a flexible lens membrane that can reflexively adjust the lens' focal length while staying relatively small in size.
