Singapore hospitals ready for dengue surge

SINGAPORE, June 22 (UPI) -- Hospitals in Singapore are preparing for a surge in patients with dengue fever near or at epidemic levels.

A total 401 cases were reported the week of June 10, a high for the year. A total 286 cases were reported this week, with 125 beds occupied by dengue patients as of Friday, the Health Ministry told The Straits Times.

The newspaper said epidemic levels are when more than 378 cases occur in a week.

A Health Ministry spokesman said public hospitals are actively monitoring dengue admissions and discharges to manage the number of hospital beds needed.

Hospitals may cut back on elective surgeries if beds are needed for dengue patients.
