Hospital says 'no' to sugary soft drinks

LONDON, May 24 (UPI) -- A hospital system in Scotland has banned sugar-laden soft drinks such as Coca-Cola from vending machines and cafeterias.

NHS Lothian's ban covers full sugar soft drinks but not diet versions of the same brands, The Scotsman newspaper said Wednesday.

Health chiefs say the ban on sugary drinks will encourage healthy living, although many staff members say they are being treated like "babies."

"The removal of sugary drinks is just one way we can encourage our staff, patients and visitors to enjoy a healthier diet while in our premises," said James McCaffery, NHS Lothian's director of human resources. "Research has shown us that reducing intake of sugary drinks can help in maintaining a healthy weight."
