PERTH, Australia, March 8 (UPI) -- Australian scientists report promising results from their trial of a vaccine to protect humans against the bird flu virus.
The trial involved 200 volunteers aged between 18 and 64 at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth, Western Australia.
"The vaccine results were very safe in the adults concerned," said the leader of the research team, Dr. Peter Richmond.
He told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that the vaccine "produced a protective immune response" and was able to neutralize the bird flu virus.
"So we would expect this vaccine would produce protection against the bird flu strain," Richmond said.
He said data has been submitted to the Therapeutic Goods Administration to assess the results of the vaccine trial.
