Implant helps fragile heart rhythm

LONDON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A British man with a rare heart condition has been given an implant designed to keep him from dying from a sudden but simple shock like a telephone ring.

Jon Cotterill-Bolsover, 28, has Brugada syndrome, a disorder that disrupts the heart's normal rhythm. A sudden noise can make the heart stop. The patient's own mobile phone stays on vibrating alert.

He was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator last November to control his irregular heart beat. The device shocks the heart if it stops and improves the odds of survival by more than 90 percent.
