ISS astronauts swear in ship's sailors

HOUSTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- International Space Station Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, assisted by astronaut Suni Williams, swore in 16 re-enlisting U.S. sailors.

The ceremony re-enlisting the sailors aboard the USS Dwight Eisenhower was conducted Monday during a live link-up from the space station. Lopez-Alegria and Williams, both U.S. Naval Academy graduates, conducted the long-distance ceremony as the space station orbited 220 miles above the Earth.

The rest of the space station crew was preparing for a Wednesday spacewalk. The crew Monday completed checking the spacesuits and associated tools and conducted a review of spacewalk procedures with specialists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's mission control center in Houston.

The first two spacewalks will involve installation of new power and cooling systems, a process started during space shuttle Discovery's STS-116 mission in December.
