New target found for fight against obesity

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A U.S. study has determined replacing a protein known as SH2B1 that's lacking in the brain of obese mice reverses their obesity.

Previous studies demonstrated mice lacking SH2B1 become obese and diabetes. However, researchers from the University of Michigan have shown that replacing SH2B1 only in the brain of such mice resolves their obesity.

The finding, said the scientists, indicates targeting SH2B1 in the brain might be a new avenue of research for the development of treatments for obesity and type II diabetes.

The study is to appear in the February issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
