PARIS, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A French medical team has completed a partial face transplant on a Paris man who was born disfigured, the third such operation in the world.
The man, who suffered from a disfiguring condition known as neurofibromatosis, was given a new nose, mouth and chin, the BBC reported Tuesday. Portions of his cheeks were also replaced.
"The patient is healing well, but is currently covered in bandages," a Henri Mondor Hospital source told The Telegraph of London. "The team is delighted with how the operation went, but it is still very early days. We are confident that everything went well."
The first surgery of the type was performed in November 2005 on a French woman who received a nose and mouth from a brain-dead human after being mauled by her pet dog.
