HOUSTON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- NASA says the STS-116 crew members have completed preparations for Tuesday's spacewalk -- the first of three that are scheduled.
Late Monday the shuttle crew, as well as the International Space Station's Expedition 14 crew members, readied spacesuits and tools that will be used during the spacewalks.
Astronauts Robert Curbeam and Christer Fuglesang will perform the first spacewalk. To prepare for the event, the men conducted an overnight "campout" in the station's airlock where the pressure was lowered to the pressure normally found on Earth -- 10,000 feet above sea level. The airlock "campout" at a lower pressure protects against decompression sickness as Curbeam and Fuglesang go to the even lower pressure maintained in spacesuits.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientists in Houston said the main objective of Tuesday's spacewalk was the installation of the P5 integrated truss onto the station. STS-116 crew members used the shuttle's robotic arm Monday to lift the P5 out of Discovery's payload bay and "hand it" to the station arm.
