Tiny crystals hold big promise

LECCE, Italy, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Big clinical and commercial possibilities abound for nanocrystals, which Italian researchers said they flooded with light.

Researchers Pier Paul Pump and Luigi Martiradonna of the National Nanotechnology Laboratory in Lecce said the tiny particles, when bombarded with light, will allow doctors to carry out tests "with an extremely high level of precision," ANSA said Friday.

The researchers said analyses could be performed at a single-molecule level, ANSA said.

Commercially, the results could lead to more efficient and cost-effective liquid crystal displays, micro-lasers, and telecommunication equipment, ANSA said.
