CAMBRIDGE, England, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Britain's Cambridge University has published a searchable online version of the complete works of scientist Charles Darwin.

The site, which currently contains about 50 percent of the content expected to be available by 2009, features tens of thousands of text, images of original publications and downloadable audio files, the BBC reported Thursday.

"The idea is to make these important works as accessible as possible; some people can only get at Darwin that way," said project director John van Wyhe.

Van Wyhe said the decision to create Darwin Online, which is available at darwin-online.org.uk, stemmed from difficulties researching Darwin at an Asian university.

"I wrote to lots of people all over the world to get hold of the texts for the project and I got a really positive reaction because they all liked the idea of there being one big collection," he said.
