Marijuana compound may slow Alzheimer's

LA JOLLA, Calif., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The key compound in marijuana may become the key compound in new drugs for Alzheimer's disease, researchers in La Jolla, Calif., study said.

In test-tube studies at Scripps Research Institute, the marijuana compound THC blocked the formation of Alzheimer's plaques in sufferers' brains better than current Alzheimer's drugs, WebMD.com said on Friday.

Kim Janda, director of the Worm Institute of Research and Medicine at the institute, said the findings offer "evidence that THC possesses remarkable inhibitory qualities," WebMD.com said.

Janda said the study found that THC blocks the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which hastens the formation of plaque in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease, WebMD.com said.
