WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Pharmaceutical maker Bayer says it stands behind the safety of the drug Trasylol despite a U.S. warning it could increase the risk of stroke and even death.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Bayer and failed to turn over a study on Trasylol, which is used in connection with heart surgery, which showed the potential risks.

The FDA didn't go so far as to pull the drug, but it issued a rare public health advisory about it Friday, The New York Times said.

Bayer said it considered Trasylol to be safe and said the study in question was not withheld from the FDA, but the data was still in its preliminary stages.
