Experts study link between sleep, health

NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- As many as one-third of all U.S. citizens regularly have trouble sleeping, a report says.

Growing concern over sleep deprivation, commonly known as insomnia, and its possibly harmful effect on health is covered in a special issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Four studies are published in the issue, CBS said, all related to the link with poor health.

Chronic lack of sleep has been tied to high blood pressure, heart failure, anxiety and depression and difficulty concentrating, among other things.

Generally, Dr. Emily Senay, a CBS expert, said those most likely to have trouble sleeping include women between the ages of 45 to 64 and people who are obese, have hypertension, congestive heart failure, anxiety or depression.
