250 Chinese diners sickened by pork

SHANGHAI, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Pork containing an animal feed additive apparently sickened more than 250 people in Shanghai, health officials say.

The feed additive, dubbed "Shouroujing," literately means lean meat essence for pigs in Chinese. It has been banned for human use, the Chinese news service Xinhua said.

Officials said 278 people, who said they had eaten pork products, were hospitalized because of the additive. Most were discharged within a day but about 12 were held for additional tests, Xinhua reported.

The patients showed symptoms of dizziness, fatigue, racing pulse and muscular tremors.
