New theory addresses frozen Earth paradox
WASHINGTON, July 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Energy Department Friday unveiled a new research roadmap for developing cellulosic ethanol as a gasoline alternative.
"Cellulosic ethanol has the potential to be a major source for transportation fuel for America's energy future," Undersecretary for Science Raymond L. Orbach said.
The DOE plan, outlined in a 200-page report, cites recent biotechnology advances making production of ethanol from cellulose an attainable and cost-effective goal.
The plan is a response to the goal announced by Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman of displacing 30 percent of 2004 transportation fuel consumption with biofuels by 2030.
