Motorola wins Warid contract in Bangladesh

SINGAPORE, June 20 (UPI) -- Motorola won a contract from Warid Telecom to deploy a new global system for mobile communication in Bangladesh.

The 2.5-generation network will be available by the end of this year across the northeastern region of the country. The plan is to make the network eventually available to 5 million new customers nationwide.

"Mobile communications is an empowering tool to transform individuals and businesses. We are pleased to be playing a part in the growing telecommunications sector in Bangladesh, and we are fully committed to building a world class mobile communications infrastructure in the country to deliver affordable voice and data services to all major cities and towns in 2006," Bashir Tahir, chief executive of Warid, said in a news release.

"The telecommunications market in Bangladesh certainly presents many opportunities for growth. Morgan Stanley revealed in a report that mobile penetration in Bangladesh can reach 25 to 30 percent within the next five years. With our expertise in designing cost-effective networks in emerging markets, we are confident that this relationship with Warid Telecom will create the building blocks to drive seamless mobility for consumers in Bangladesh," said Jay Andersen, vice president of sales and operations for Motorola networks and enterprise.
