TORONTO, June 13 (UPI) -- Canada's industry minister Tuesday threw his support behind recommendations for less regulation of the nation's telecom sector.

Maxime Bernier said in a speech in Toronto that a proposed policy direction had been presented by his office to Parliament earlier in the day that largely endorsed recommendations made earlier this year by the Telecom Policy Review.

"It calls on the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission) to regulate telecommunications services only when necessary," Bernier told the Canadian Telecom Summit.

The Toronto Globe and Mail said the changes were largely backed by majors Telus and Bell Canada, who contend regulations have restricted their ability to compete with cable companies entering the telecom market.
