Farm children more likely to die of injury

OTTAWA, June 2 (UPI) -- A new study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows that young farm children are twice as likely as other Canadian children to die from injury.

The study suggests that children ages 1-6, particularly boys, are at about twice the normal risk to die from accidental injury when on a farm or ranch. Most fatal injuries happen at agricultural worksites, the study shows.

The study was conducted after researchers collected and analyzed data on agricultural fatalities in young children. The goal of the study was to identify possible patterns, examine rates and devise solutions.

Researchers found three main ways farm fatalities occur to children, and proposed prevention strategies, the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported.
