Texas teen dies from rabies

HUMBLE, Texas, May 16 (UPI) -- A Humble, Texas, teen died from rabies he apparently contracted from a bat that flew in his bedroom, was captured and let go, The Houston Chronicle reports.

Zachary Jones died Friday -- less than a week after the Humble High School football player, straight-A student and well-liked 16-year-old was hospitalized.

"The kids right now are in shock," parent Deena Logan, whose daughter is a cheerleader, told the newspaper. "They're asking themselves, how can this happen to such an all-American boy, a football player?"

Jones, who encountered the bat several weeks before he was hospitalized May 6, died despite drug concoctions that required federal approval in an attempt to replicate 2004's success for rabies victim Jeanna Giese, 15, of Wisconsin.

As a precaution, Harris County, Texas, health officials recommended that about 30 of Jones' classmates seek medical attention, the newspaper reported.
