2nd E coli day-care outbreak reported

INSCH, Scotland, May 15 (UPI) -- A second day-care center in Scotland has been hit by an E coli outbreak, but officials said they do not believe the Insch cases are related to those in Fife.

Two children who attended Dreams Daycare in Insch were hospitalized late last week from the infection. Both were in satisfactory condition, reports said Monday.

Meanwhile, five children who attended the Careshare day-care center in Fife remained hospitalized fighting kidney failure. They were among eight confirmed and 23 suspected E coli cases.

"We wouldn't expect cases of E coli in two (Scottish) nurseries in a year, let alone two in a week," E coli expert Hugh Pennington of Aberdeen University told The Scotsman.

However, officials told The Scotsman and the Glasgow Herald that they doubt the E coli outbreaks are related.

The potentially deadly bacterial infection is spread easily through poor sanitation practices.
