Doctors rebel against drug data sales

NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- Some doctors are rebelling against computerized data pharmaceutical companies use to identify who is prescribing what drug, reports say.

The practice, which The New York Times says is virtually unknown to consumers, is a long-time valuable tool in drug sales.

"It's the most powerful tool a drug rep has, for sure," one former salesman told the Times.

But it's being viewed by some physicians as an intrusion by overzealous sales personnel.

Lawmakers are looking into the practice as well. New Hampshire scheduled a vote Thursday on a proposal to clamp down on the practice. Similar bills are under study in other states.

The American Medical Association is stepping in to try to avoid state control. The AMA plans to give doctors the choice of declaring their prescription records off limits to drug sales representatives.
