Dobson upgrades North Slope cell service

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, May 2 (UPI) -- Dobson Communications has expanded its GSM cell-phone service into the oil fields of Alaska's North Slope.

Dobson's Cellular One wireless debuted in the metro Deadhorse region Monday, making it the first GSM voice and data provider in the North Slope area.

"Alaskans live and work across a vast area connected by few roads," said Dobson Operations Manager Jim Kohler. "Our GSM wireless technology provides a technology bridge that links communities together."

Dobson is the largest wireless provider in Alaska and is expanding its GSM/GPRS/EDGE third-generation voice and data services across the state. The Oklahoma company has agreed to purchase wireless assets in Kodiak and Nome and is awaiting FCC approval of the acquisitions.
