A 'blood library' is being created

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 11 (UPI) -- The University of Alabama-Birmingham and the National Cancer Institute are creating a "blood library," to open a new chapter in ovarian cancer prevention.

The library will be a repository of blood samples that will assist scientists in developing new screening methods.

"Even though the study will collect samples from patients with the disease, the long-term benefit is to help women who may develop ovarian cancer," said Dr. Mack Barnes, a gynecologic oncologist and lead investigator for UAB's part of the project.

"If we can harness the protein information in the blood samples, we may have a strong lead on how to detect this cancer at an early stage, when it can be most effectively treated," he said.
