NEW YORK, March 17 (UPI) -- New York City health officials want toddlers in 2,000 of the largest city-licensed nurseries and day-care centers to eat less fat and exercise.
Health officials have announced a plan that requires the child-care faculties eliminate whole milk, limit juice and TV watching and schedule an hour of exercise for preschoolers and toddlers, the New York Post reported Friday.
"Obesity is epidemic in New York City, and it begins early in life," the Health Department said in its proposal. "This epidemic requires similar urgency in public health response to that traditionally accorded to infectious disease monitoring and control."
Health officials said they want to take action after a 2004 study found that 22 percent of low-income city kids, ages 2 to 4, enrolled in a federal nutritional program, were obese.
