Whale in River Thames spotted upstream

LONDON, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A whale that had been stranded in the River Thames in London for most of Friday, has been spotted further inland at Battersea.

The 16-foot to 18-foot northern bottle-nosed whale appeared to look thin and have injuries, but Tony Woodley of British Divers Marine Life Rescue Group said it was not possible to tell what the whale's condition is.

Woodley said a veterinarian with the Zoological Society of London saw the whale from a boat and said it appeared to have injuries, the BBC reported Friday.

"The vet said there were injuries to the top of its head and it was clearly swimming in a disorientated manner," said Woodley. "There was also a tremor in it's tail, like a spasm, which indicated its health is compromised."

The last time a whale was spotted in central London was 1913, the Daily Telegraph said.
