China collecting old cell phones

  |   Dec. 27, 2005 at 11:51 AM
BEIJNG, China, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- China has launched a program to collect and dispose of old, unwanted cell phones.

China's Xinhua news agency said Tuesday the so-called Green Box Environment Plan began earlier this month to facilitate the recycling of the components in an environmentally friendly manner.

China Mobile is running the program in conjunction with Motorola and Nokia and has already accumulated 3 tons of discarded handsets at more than 1,300 drop boxes.

China is the world's largest cell-phone market with around 388 million subscribers and is a target market for new devices.
