AGRA, India, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A British dentist successfully treated a toothache in an Indian sloth bear, rescued from a roadside in India where bears "dance" for tourists.
The sloth bear, named Jo, was one of 90 sloth bears rescued from Goa last year by a charity based in Britain, the International Animal Rescue.
Like all dancing bears, Jo had all four of her canine teeth smashed by an iron bar when she about 10 months old to reduce the risk of a dangerous bite to her handler and to make photographs of her appear more friendly, the Daily Telegraph report Friday.
Jo, was one of eight bears having dental surgery this week at a sanctuary outside Agra, India.
Cassar, a root canal specialist, was talked into going to India by his patient, Alan Knight, the chief executive of IAR.
The broken tooth stumps, often infected, would hurt the bears' health.
