Labor seeks role in Africa telecom growth

JOHANNESBURGH, South Africa, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Trade unionists are calling for a sizable role in the expansion of Africa's telecom sector.

The UNI-Africa Telecom Committee said in a statement Friday that unions must organize workers in the major telecom companies they see as dominating the industry on the continent.

The union also called for affordable universal broadband throughout Africa, along with the infrastructure to support it.

"The committee also passed a resolution condemning the ITU (industry group International Telecommunications Union) for developing a regulatory policy for West African countries with absolutely no input from trade unions or mention of employment related issues in the policy," the UNI said in a statement on the resolution, which came out of the committee's meeting in Johannesburg earlier this month.
