WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. EPA says it is extending until Jan. 31 the public comment period on reducing fine particle pollution in areas not meeting certain standards.
The proposed rule outlines steps state, local and tribal governments must take to reduce fine particle pollution in areas that do not meet Environmental Protection Agency's health-based air quality standards.

The proposed rule describes the planning framework and requirements for regional and local governments to consider when developing their plans to reduce air pollution to meet the EPA standards.
EPA officials said they will hold a public hearing on the proposed rule Nov. 30 in Washington, D.C.
