WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The Agriculture Department Friday announced $9 million in broadband connection grants to 19 rural communities in 14 states plus Puerto Rico.
The funds issued under the Community Connect Broadband Grant go to areas where broadband connectivity currently does not exist and will facilitate economic growth.
The USDA said examples of the benefits broadband brings to the hinterlands range from bringing government services online to giving residents the opportunity to take telecommuting jobs or sell merchandise.
"The Bush Administration continues to encourage the economic vitality that can result from broadband deployment in rural areas," said Assistant Secretary Chuck Conner. "The announcement of these grants furthers the President's goal to provide all Americans with access to broadband technology."
