
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Skype said Monday it will be acquired by eBay for $2.6 billion.
The voice over Internet protocol company said in a news release that eBay's acquisition of Skype "will strengthen eBay's global marketplace and payments platform, while opening several new lines of new business."
Skpe also said that the deal will be a "major opportunity for Skype to advance its leadership in Internet voice communications and offer people worldwide new ways to communicate in a global online era."
"By combining the two leading ecommerce franchises, eBay and PayPal, with the leader in Internet voice communications, we will create an extraordinarily powerful environment for business on the (Internet)," stated the online auction house's chief executive Meg Whitman.
