MOSCOW, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Bird flu has spread to seven Russian federal districts and 91 villages since July, Russia's chief epidemiologist said.
There have been no cases identified in humans who had contact with infected birds, said Gennady Onishchenko, head of the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare in Moscow.
He said the virus had been confirmed in the Altai territory, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Kurgan, Chelyabinsk and Kalmykia regions. Quarantine had been imposed on 91 villages but has since been lifted in seven villages, reported Novosti, the Russian government news agency reported Thursday.
Bird flu has also been found among wild and domestic birds, Onishchenko said.
"Domestic poultry (in infected villages) have been killed; no deaths have been reported among wild birds," he said.
