MOSCOW, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- A record for the cumulative time in space was set Tuesday by Russia's orbiting cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, who has spent 748 days aloft.
Krikalev, 46, is the current commander of the International Space Station. He boarded April 14, and is scheduled to stay on board until Oct. 7.

He was selected as a cosmonaut in 1985, and made his first long-duration mission to the Russian Mir space station in 1988.
The cosmonaut flew aboard space shuttle Discovery on STS-60, the first joint U.S.-Russian shuttle mission in 1994, and was also part of the first crew to stay aboard the International Space Station.
His record beats that of 747 days, 14 hours, 14 minutes and 11 seconds by fellow Russian Sergei Avdeyev.
