GMPCS orders 1,000 satellite terminals

POMPANO BEACH, Fla., July 29 (UPI) -- Satellite-communications provider GMPCS has placed an order for 1,000 personal broadband satellite terminals from Nera SatCom.

The terminals will allow GMPCS customers to connect to Inmarsat's Broadband Global Area Network at speeds approaching 384 kbps from 85 percent of the Earth's land mass.

"Inmarsat's BGAN service has the potential to revolutionise mobile satellite communications, offering high-speed data connectivity and voice communications from a terminal half the size of a laptop computer," Craig Van Wagner, president and chief executive officer of GMPCS, said in a news release. "GMPCS is committed to having equipment on the shelf and ready for distribution immediately upon commercial availability of the BGAN service."
