Man survives heatstroke and 108 body temp

ST. PAUL, Minn., July 15 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin construction worker is alive after surviving heatstroke and having a body temperature of 108 F.

Forty-one-year-old Dennis Thompson, of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., said he had been taking breaks and drinking water Tuesday as he as three others were putting up a fence at Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Arden Hills, Minn.

Thompson said that in the afternoon his legs started to shake but he ignored it and kept on working. He later fell over and his co-workers called 911 and he was taken to the hospital.

Doctors at Unity Hospital in Fridley, Minn., forced ice water into his stomach and bladder, but Thompson lost the ability to breathe properly and was sedated and put on a ventilator, reported the Minneapolis Star-Tribune Friday.

Family members from Wisconsin said they were told Thompson might not make it and if he did chances of him being normal were pretty slim.

However, 24 hours after he collapsed, Thompson woke up and seemed none the worse for wear.

Minnesota Viking Korey Stringer died four years ago after collapsing at training camp after his body temperature reached 108.8 F.
