Federal telecom spending on the rise

RESTON, Va., July 13 (UPI) -- Government market watcher INPUT said federal telecommunications spending is expected to increase by 34 percent over the next five years.

INPUT released a report Wednesday that found the U.S. government's increasing need to move huge amounts of data quickly and securely will bring telecom spending from $16 billion in fiscal year 2005 to more than $21 billion in 2010.

The firm expects spending on wireless services to grow at double that rate, from $1.9 billion in 2005 to $3.3 billion in 2010.

"No individual segment of the telecommunications market has seen as explosive growth as the wireless segment," Chris Campbell, INPUT senior analyst for federal market analysis, said in a news release. "The advantage afforded to agencies by being able to stay in constant communication with key personnel, whether they are on the battlefield or in a remote office, greatly enhances an agency's ability to perform its mission."
