Swedes to build Stradivarius-like violin

HARNOSAND, Sweden, July 8 (UPI) -- Scientists at Mid Sweden University are using modern technology to uncover the secrets of Stradivarius violins.

The researchers are using an advanced mathematical optimization method to create a violin with the same acoustic properties as a Stradivarius instrument.

"It's not possible to copy Stradivarius violins exactly, since wood is a living material with great natural variations," said musical acoustician Mats Tinnsten. "The results of new research indicate, however, that we will be able to overcome such difficulties with the aid of advanced computer support."

Few have managed to produce anything that even approaches the best work of the Italian violin maker who lived from 1644-1737.

The findings will be presented at the international acoustics conference ICSV12, in Lisbon beginning Monday.
