Mars rover frees itself

ITHACA, N.Y., June 30 (UPI) -- NASA's Mars rover Opportunity has managed to unstick itself from a sandy area and has resumed its meandering over the red planet, space.com reports.

NASA scientists still haven't figured out how Opportunity got stuck in the first place. Now that it's free, it's using its robot arm to study the problem area and figure out a safe path.

Scientists named the area Purgatory Dune.

Steve Squyres, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Rover missions at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, said researchers hope to learn more about the composition of Purgatory Dune.

Opportunity's twin, Spirit, is exploring the other side of Mars and scientists are debating whether to task it with climbing to the summit of an area dubbed Husband Hill.
