AMD Japan unit seeks $55M from Intel

TOKYO, June 30 (UPI) -- The Japan office of Californian chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices filed two lawsuits Thursday against the Japanese office of rival Intel.

AMD had filed a lawsuit against Intel in the United States earlier this week for antitrust-law violation, namely for forcing over 30 computer manufacturers to use Intel chips.

The Japanese lawsuit specifically targets the world's biggest semiconductor maker for breaking the antitrust regulations in Japan and seeks to be awarded a total of $55 million in damages.

In March the Japanese Fair Trade Commission ruled that Intel had been violating Japan's antitrust laws, and Intel did not contest that ruling.

At a news briefing in Tokyo Thursday AMD Japan Director Shunsuke Yoshizawa said AMD's business in Japan was suffering because Intel was coercing Toshiba, Sony and Hitachi to use its chips.

"Our business to them is still zero as it stands now," Yoshizawa said.
