$8 million awarded for cancer misdiagnosis

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla., June 10 (UPI) -- A Florida jury has awarded $8 million to a husband whose wife died of complications from cancer treatment when she had no cancer.

Janet Pandrea, 65, died in April 2002, three months after she had seen her doctor complaining of a cold and lingering cough.

Her family doctor ordered a chest X-ray, which revealed a mass in her chest and the family doctor ordered a needle biopsy, the Miami Herald reported.

A pathologist from Coral Springs Medical Center testified he misdiagnosed Pandrea with malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A few months later she died of complications stemming from her treatment, according to court documents.

Jurors determined the share of negligence as follows: the oncologist, 50 percent; Coral Springs Medical Center, 10 percent; the family doctor, 12 percent and the University Hospital, where nurses monitored Pandrea's illness, 28 percent.

Some of the defendants may appeal the verdict.
