ATLANTA, May 25 (UPI) -- A Harvard Medical School study suggests teenage girls with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder have a higher risk of developing mental illness by age 17.
Study leader and child psychologist Joseph Biederman says the study highlights the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, USA Today reported Wednesday.
Biederman and his colleagues studied the cases of 140 girls with ADHD from ages 12 to 17 and compared them with 122 girls without the disorder. The ADHD girls were found to be far more likely to be clinically depressed, to have anxiety disorders or to have developed a behaviorial disorder by 17 years of age.
The study was detailed during an American Psychiatric Association meeting in Atlanta.
