MELBOURNE, May 16 (UPI) -- Not only do girls mature faster than boys physically, they do better on social and educational milestones as well, an Australian study found.

A longitudinal study of Australian children, coordinated by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, surveyed 10,000 children and their families and found girls do better than boys on social, educational and physical milestones in the first year of life and the differences become more pronounced by the time they reach school age.

In addition, the boys lead girls in every measure of disengagement and psychological disorder from attention deficit syndromes to at-risk social behavior, the Australian reported Monday.

Children with no siblings had the highest scores in learning and academic competency.

Parents' confidence in their ability influenced their child's social and emotional development suggesting that confidence breeds confidence, while low parental warmth and high parental hostility were associated with negative outcomes in children.
