ATLANTA, April 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added four coordinating centers and two national offices as part of a major reorganization.
The Atlanta-based agency has also collapsed 40 national hotlines into a single information line, a move it expects to save $35 million in the next seven years.
The new coordinating centers are Environmental Health and Injury Prevention, Health Promotion, Infectious Diseases and Health Information and Services. The new national offices are the National Center for Public Health Informatics, aimed at using the latest technology to translate scientific data into usable information, and the National Center for Health Marketing, to provide information to help the public make healthy decisions.
The CDC says it has also reduced administrative costs by $83 million, reallocating the money to research, and shifted 600 open positions from administration to researchers, lab technicians and other frontline workers.
