Study: School buses endanger students

BERKELEY, Calif., April 5 (UPI) -- California scientists say Berkeley school bus children collectively inhale as much or more exhaust from those buses than does the rest of the population.

The study, set for an April 15 publication in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, is the first to look specifically at how much exhaust is inhaled on school buses.

The researchers, who analyzed results from tracer-gas experiments, measured the air in six empty school buses traveling through established routes in south-central and suburban Los Angeles.

Nine runs were made with windows open and seven with windows closed in April, May and June 2002.

The researchers found in a single day a child riding a school bus will breathe in 7 to 70 times more exhaust from that bus than a typical Los Angeles resident will inhale from all school bus emissions in the area.
